Neanderthals, ancient hominins who disappeared from the fossil record around 40,000 years ago, were found to have shared genetic variants related to sleep with modern humans. A recent study compared the DNA of living humans with genetic material retrieved from Neanderthal fossils. The research revealed that Neanderthals carried clock-related genetic variants similar to those found in individuals who identify as early risers. The study also suggested that mutations in certain body-clock genes unique to Neanderthals might have influenced their circadian rhythms. This finding offers insights into how ancient hominins adapted to different environments.
